Shamar Brown aka @gnarleybrown is known for the portraits and photos he takes of friends and folks in Rochester, as well as his work in front of the camera. His portfolio definitely features some iconic Roc buildings but even more than that he captures iconic people and cultural elements of our city.
Duppyy and Allan make up Rochester’s most beloved DJ duo. They’re both natives, born and raised here in Roc. In their travels to other places like Toronto and New York, they found a vibrant nightlife centered around the connectivity of music, so they decided to bring that back with them and began playing DJ sets here.
Moses Rockwell is a Rochester-based rapper and musician who has been rapping for over 20 years. Moses has not approached making music with the intention of broad appeal—his raps are personal, an expression of self, which he has performed live stateside and abroad.
Elanor James is an artist here in Rochester who works out of her studio space at the Yards Collective. She paints animals and people with a distinct point of view, creating a world of folk-inspired art that invites in any viewer and lets them know that these creatures are here to be friendly in the world.
Our friend/local entrepreneur Brandon Opalich is the owner of Aldaskellar Wine Co in the South Wedge. From years working in food and beverage here and elsewhere, Brandon realized that he had an incredible passion for natural wine, so he decided to open a shop devoted to it in Rochester.
Voula Katsetos-Garwood is the owner and founder of Voula’s Greek Sweets, a staple in Rochester that has been in business for 10 years. Voula’s kitchen skills come from a lifetime around accomplished Greek cooks and bakers—her family. All of Voula’s dishes are from family recipes, some modified with vegetarian substitutes, but all made lovingly from scratch.
Rochester artist Bradd Young aka SALUT has an iconic surrealist style inspired by cartoons and other distinct aesthetics. You can find his work at the MAG Rochester, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, as well as in different cities in the US.
Rochester native Mikey Thayer has been making paper collage art since 2017, following a move to Philadelphia two years before. He’s since come back to Roc and continues to collage with paper here.
